Nicola Benedetti returns to Worthing’s Assembly Hall to perform Sibelius’s awe-inspiring Violin Concerto in D minor.   Perhaps best known for Finlandia, Sibelius composed eight symphonies, a large number of tone poems and a considerable number of other orchestral works.  The composer himself was a superb violinist and his skill with the instrument is evident in this exhilarating work.

Bizet’s Carmen is arguably one of the best known operas in the world and The Suite reflects the excitement of Gypsy Life and the sorrow of unrequited love.

Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Waltz reflects the joy of Sleeping Beauty waking from her enforced sleep and the love she finds thereafter.  Sibelius’s Swan of Tuonela, one of seven symphonic poems, tells of the land of the dead and the swan that glides across a black flood whilst singing.

William Alwyn’s powerful Symphony No. 3 was written partly in London and partly on the Isle of Wight and reflects upon Alwyn’s past while also looking to the future.  This symphony was conducted by WSOs Principal Conductor John Gibbons, on BBC Radio 3 in recent times.
