Smetana - Overture to The Bartered Bride
Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor
Schumann - Symphony No. 4 in D minor
Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s Season opens with an outstanding piano concerto by Edward Grieg – the only concerto he completed.
The Piano Concerto in A minor is one of his most popular works, and is among the most popular of the genre. Grieg, being only 24 years old at the time of the composition, had taken inspiration from Robert Schumann's only concerto, also being in A minor. It is being performed at this concert by Rhythmie Wong who was a finalist in the 4th Sussex International Piano competition. Her brilliant and effusive playing will bring sparkle and joy to Grieg’s exquisite work.
Smetana’s The Bartered Bride was his second opera completed in 1866. The music of the Overture is full of high spirits and virtuosic orchestration.
Schumann’s Fourth Symphony was originally composed shortly after his First, but its unconventional layout bewildered contemporary audiences. In its revised form Schumann was able to make this radical work intelligible, and it has remained immensely popular ever since.
